Project:
Extension - Lammas Park, Ealing
The brief:
To unify the kitchen and dining room, and extend
the dining area so that it opens on to the garden, providing a relaxing
seating area.
The solution:
The
kitchen and dining room were divided by a very imposing chimney-breast.
Once this was removed the area became far more spacious. The kitchen
layout was designed to provide as much storage space as possible but
at the same time not to be too over-bearing, and a central island
unit gives extra surface space, acting as a focal point.
The rear of the house faces east, so the extension was to be as light
and airy as possible. A large sliding door opens directly on to the
terrace, connecting the extension to the outside space. A large
roof light allows more light to penetrate into the rear internal dining
area and placing three tall windows on the rear wall gives framed
pictures of the back garden and links the elevation visually with
the existing rear elevation.
The choice of lights and the arrangement was an important element
of the design providing focal points and allowing flexibility, depending
on the occasion.
The timber floor boards were carried on through from the rest of the
ground floor and the use of a strong colour on one wall of the extension
and the kitchen contributes to the sense of cohesion throughout the
room.
