| Project: Loft Conversion, South
Ealing
The Brief: The clients wanted a space that was as light and airy as possible, making the most of the uninterrupted views from the rear window. The Solution: Every bit of space possible was incorporated into the plan, providing maximum storage as well as interesting shapes. To produce a greater feeling of headroom, the ceiling extends to the apex of the roof, with the rafters left exposed. Access to the shower room is directly off the landing, so that it can be used by the whole family or visitors. The stairs to the loft are the same dimensions as the lower stairs, so that the upper rooms feel like an integral part of the house. The exterior of the dormer was clad in lead, which is the traditional material for cladding dormers. The loft was to be used as an office, as well as a bedroom. The clients chose use part of the floor space to act as an external balcony, which also allowed the rear wall to be completely glazed. |
