shower with spots Project: Refurbishment of kitchen & bathroom, W. Ealing

The brief:

To remodel a conversion flat into an attractive and practical space taking into account the needs of a 79 year old woman .

The solution:

A number of aspects were important in this scheme. The budget was very tight and the flat belonged to an elderly person, who wanted to continue living independently for as long as possible. She spent a lot of time in the kitchen/diner, so it was important that it should be inviting.

The original bathroom door was directly in front on entry to the kitchen, making access to the toilet awkward. The door was relocated, making more space in the bathroom and providing a better layout for the kitchen cabinets. The bath was replaced by a wide shower with a much lower than usual step to the shower tray and an adjacent space which could be useful for a helper if necessary.

The kitchen was kept as simple as possible, with the introduction of a a larder unit to reduce the need for bending low to reach into cupboards. The flooring was especially chosen for its non-slip qualities.
