Project: Extension, South Ealing The brief: to extend the existing cramped kitchen and dining room to provide a family area.
The solution: The project is a terraced house with the stairs located in the middle. Various alternative layouts were considered prior to selecting this arrangement which kept the kitchen in its old location but with a central island unit providing additional storage and a focal point. The space under the stairs was also utilized to provide a conveniently-placed larder. The step down to the family area was retained to provide a delineation between the functional areas and the more general family area. However, the same flooring was used throughout to unite the two areas. The design of the kitchen units provided a particular challenge; the use of a wide, non-standard 700 cm hob and double-height wall units required a strong eye for detail and proportions in order to provide a seamless and aesthetically-pleasing layout. The sliding folding doors open up to the terrace which extends the family area into the garden, providing a great indoor and outdoor play space for the children and entertaining area for the adults in the warmer months.
