Project: Extension & Remodelling, Richmond

The brief:  to remodel the ground floor, incorporating a new kitchen, dining area and bathroom, while providing as much light as possible.

The solution:

The client owned a small 2 bedroom workman’s cottage in Richmond with the bathroom located on the ground floor and an open plan downstairs area.  She loved to entertain but had nowhere to put a dining table, the interior was dark and storage space was limited.

Consideration was given to relocating the bathroom to the first floor but this was not ideal, as it would have meant reducing the size of one of the bedrooms too much.

The ground floor was open plan (apart from the bathroom) including the entrance, living room, kitchen and stairs, which divided the living space. Working within these constraints, a sleeker kitchen, surprisingly spacious bathroom, extra space for a dining area and more effective storage were provided by extending at the back of the property.  Although only adding an extra 4.5 x 3.5m, it transformed the downstairs space into a much lighter, more practical living area.

The linear white kitchen with granite work surface leads the eye out through to the garden. A large rear door and roof lights allow more light to flood into the living area. There was even enough room for a neat airing cupboard and coat cupboard, enabling the client to keep clutter behind closed doors and enjoy entertaining in a more minimalist and modern environment.
